8/14/2023 0 Comments Red white and royal blue bookAnd when the tabloids get hold of a photo involving an Alex-Henry altercation, U.S./British relations take a turn for the worse. There's only one problem: Alex has a beef with the actual prince, Henry, across the pond. Handsome, charismatic, genius-his image is pure millennial-marketing gold for the White House. When his mother became President, Alex Claremont-Diaz was promptly cast as the American equivalent of a young royal. It makes a wonderful gift for rom com fans, but I’d recommend checking it out from your local library. What happens when America's First Son falls in love with the Prince of Wales? It’s filled to the brim with tropes and romance that you’ll love, as long as you don’t take it too seriously. Red, White, and Royal Blue is a great light read for older teens and young adults who enjoy classic rom coms. Some of the humor was actually funny, but a lot of it felt a little forced. We can all tell exactly where the book’s going, but the tension makes it interesting enough to get you to finish it. Those high stakes combined with the cliche and predictable story made it a safer and lighter read that wasn’t entirely boring. The political element serves to raise the stakes of the romance, which I did not like, but it is an interesting way of grounding the story in reality. Though Alex and Henry are pretty annoying, it is sweet to see how they interact and fall for each other. The emails carry the book, and if it were entirely an epistolary novel I would have liked it a lot more. That being said, I understand why many people liked it. The integration of politics is mishandled at worst and performative at best. But because the content is aimed at older audiences, it feels dragged on and immature. Without the explicit language and some of the mature content, this would have been a great children’s novel. The story takes itself too seriously while also sounding like a run-of-the-mill rom-com aimed at elementary schoolers. None of the characters are likable nor do they grow over the course of the novel. It’s incredibly cheesy in an early 2000s Disney Channel original movie kind of way, but without the elements that made those bearable. The book is a series of cliches loosely tied together. Anyone who is in this age range and enjoys a terrific, well-written enemies-to-lovers romance will absolutely love Red, White, & Royal Blue, and I can’t praise it any higher. I recommend Red, White, & Royal Blue to anyone ages 15 and up, more specifically readers in high school or older. It deals with themes of self-acceptance and living a life that is true to you, instead of by living for what’s expected of you. Red, White, and Royal Blue serves as a great piece of LGBT+ representation in literature, as it centers on a romance between Alex, a bisexual, and Henry, who is gay. There is a lot of discussion about the politics and history of both countries, yet it is written in a way that even if these aren’t your particular interests, you can still find yourself enjoying every last word. This book contains a mixture of humor, love, and serious moments that make the reader feel deeply invested in the story. The enemies-to-lovers romance between the two leads is beyond captivating, and seeing it grow stronger on every page is beautiful. In the end, Alex and Henry prove that love proves to trump all.Ĭasey McQuiston’s debut novel is truly exceptional. Alex's mom is in a tight race for re-election, and the Royal Family isn't going to be accepting of the idea, either. Alex and Henry want to pursue a relationship together, knowing that they must keep it secret. until it is something way more than that. Constantly texting and calling each other, they grow to be very close friends. A friendship that starts as a sham ultimately evolves into something real. When word gets out about an altercation between the boys at the royal wedding, the two are forced into posing as best friends in order to clear the political tension.
